In recognition of Skin Cancer Awareness Month<\/b>, the dermatology<\/span><\/a> experts at Advanced Dermatology & Skin Surgery are encouraging the community in the Spokane and Inland Northwest to rethink common misconceptions about sunscreen that may be leaving their skin unprotected. While sunscreen<\/span><\/a> is a critical defense against harmful UV radiation, several persistent myths continue to undermine its effectiveness.<\/p>\n

Here are five sunscreen myths people need to stop believing:<\/h3>\n

Myth #1: A higher SPF means you don\u2019t need to reapply<\/b>
\nThe truth:<\/b> No sunscreen provides all-day protection. Even high SPF formulas wear off over time. Frequent application<\/span><\/a> is important and should be done at least every two hours or after swimming or sweating.<\/p>\n

Myth #2: Makeup with SPF is enough protection<\/b>
\nThe truth:<\/b> While makeup containing SPF can offer an added layer of defense, most people don\u2019t apply enough to achieve adequate protection. A broad-spectrum sunscreen (protects against both UVA and UVB rays) with an SPF of 30 or higher should always be applied underneath. Also, don\u2019t neglect your neck, your ears, and your chest.<\/p>\n

Myth #3: You can\u2019t get sunburned through a window<\/b>
\nThe truth:<\/b> While glass blocks UVB rays, it does not fully block UVA rays, which penetrate deeper into the skin and contribute to aging and skin cancer risk. Daily sunscreen use is important, even indoors and while driving.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

Myth #4: Sunscreen blocks vitamin D production<\/b>
\nThe truth:<\/b> In practice, sunscreen use does not completely prevent vitamin D absorption. Plus, vitamin D can be safely obtained through diet – such as fatty fish, fortified dairy products, and cereals – or through supplements when needed. The Skin Cancer Foundation<\/span><\/a> stresses that exposing unprotected skin to sunlight to maintain vitamin D levels is not recommended, as it increases the risk of skin cancer<\/b> and premature skin aging.<\/p>\n

Myth #5: Sunscreen causes more harm than good<\/b>
\nThe truth:<\/b> Misinformation about sunscreen ingredients has led to unnecessary concern. Sunscreens available in the U.S. are regulated for safety and play a vital role in preventing Skin Cancer<\/b>. The risks of unprotected sun exposure far outweigh any potential concerns. It\u2019s important to know how sunscreen works. Sunscreens protect the skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation in two primary ways. Mineral (physical) sunscreens<\/b>, typically made with ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, sit on the skin’s surface and reflect or scatter UV rays. Chemical sunscreens<\/b>, on the other hand, absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat, which is then released from the skin. Both types are effective when used correctly and labeled \u201cbroad-spectrum,\u201d meaning they protect against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays. The best sunscreen is ultimately the one you\u2019ll use consistently.<\/p>\n

Skin cancer remains the most common cancer in the United States, yet it is also one of the most preventable. Incorporating a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher into your daily routine, along with protective clothing and annual skin exams<\/span><\/a>, can significantly reduce your risk. \u201cIt\u2019s never too late to start practicing sun-safe behavior, and it\u2019s never too late to start treating signs of sun damage,\u201d says Dr. Paul Dunn<\/span><\/a>, board-certified dermatologist at the Spokane Valley and Coeur d\u2019Alene locations<\/p>\n
